Bottom Line: Bali is paradise if you know where to avoid. The southern tourist traps (Kuta, Seminyak Beach) are crowded and overpriced. Head north to Canggu’s surf camps, Ubud’s rice terraces, and Uluwatu’s cliff temples for the Bali that made the island famous. Book Uluwatu temple sunset tour on Klook with kecak fire dance and sunset dinner — about €35/pax, saves the parking chaos.

Bali receives 6+ million tourists annually, and the island has changed massively since the Instagram era. But Bali still has magic — if you know where to look.

Ubud: Arts, Rice & Spirituality

Ubud is Bali’s cultural heart: art galleries, yoga retreats, rice terraces, and the famous Monkey Forest.

Tegalalang Rice Terrace: 15 minutes north of Ubud. The most photographed rice terraces in Bali. Go early (7 AM) before the tourist buses arrive, or pay a local farmer IDR 10,000 (~€0.60) to walk through their private section for a cleaner photo.

Ubud Palace + Market: Traditional Balinese architecture, free to visit. The adjacent market is for bargaining — start at 30% of the asking price.

Yoga and wellness: Bali’s yoga retreat capital. The Yoga Barn (Ubud) offers drop-in classes from €15, or commit to a week-long immersion for €200-400.

Canggu: Surf and Coffee

Canggu has replaced Kuta as Bali’s backpacker/surf base, with a younger crowd and better coffee scene.

Surf camps: Book surf lessons on Klook — 3-day surf camp with accommodation from €150, including board rental. Echo Beach and Batu Bolong are the main breaks.

Coffee: Canggu has more specialty coffee roasters per capita than anywhere in Southeast Asia. Try Revolver Espresso (Canggu) or Seniman Coffee Studio (Ubud).

Uluwatu: Cliffs and Temples

The southern peninsula’s cliff-top temple, Uluwatu, is one of Bali’s seven sad节的 (key temples). The sunset kecak fire dance (performed in the open-air theater adjacent to the temple) is a nightly ritual.

Book Uluwatu sunset tour on Klook — includes temple entry, guided walk, kecak dance, and dinner on the cliff. About €35/pax. Book direct temple entry is IDR 60,000 (~€3.50) but no cultural context.

Surf at Uluwatu: One of the world’s best reef breaks. Buy a day pass at the surf bend (IDR 150,000/~€9) and paddle out with the locals.

Getting Around Bali

Scooter: The most common transport. Rent a scooter for IDR 70,000-100,000 (~€4-6) per day. Requires confidence — Bali’s traffic is chaotic.

GoJek/Grab: Southeast Asia’s version of Uber. Much cheaper than taxis. Download the apps before you arrive.

Car with driver: Full day with driver about IDR 800,000-1,200,000 (~€50-75). Worth it for Ubud-Canggu-Uluwatu loop.

eSIM for Indonesia

Telkomsel has the best Bali coverage. Airalo Indonesia eSIM — 15GB/30 days for about €22, excellent 4G coverage throughout Bali including Nusa islands.

Alternatively, Yesim eSIM for Turkey & Indonesia is available if you’re traveling to multiple countries.
