For most Shanghai–Osaka trips, compare Shanghai Pudong (PVG) to Kansai International (KIX) nonstop flights. Do not choose by the first headline fare: compare the final round-trip price after checked baggage, cabin baggage, seat selection, payment fees, change rules and the cost of reaching each airport.
There is no honest year-round “¥700 fare” or universal best booking window. Prices and schedules are live inventory. Spring Airlines can win for a light traveller; a bundled or full-service fare can be cheaper once a checked bag and flexibility are included.

Use the correct airports
- PVG–KIX is the core international city pair. KIX’s live flight information currently shows Shanghai services operated by airlines including Spring, Juneyao, China Eastern and JAL, but a flight appearing today does not guarantee the same schedule on your date.
- SHA is the Shanghai city code and also the code for Hongqiao Airport. A search using city codes may return multiple airports or connections. Check the actual departure airport on every result.
- OSA is an Osaka city code, not an airport. International results usually use KIX. Itami (ITM) is primarily a domestic airport; do not assume a scheduled Hongqiao–Itami flight exists because an old article says so.
- Nearby Chinese airports such as Ningbo can be useful only after adding rail, hotel and transfer costs. “Consistently 10–15% cheaper” was an unsupported claim.
Confirm the operating flight—not only a codeshare number—using the airline and KIX annual flight schedule.

Spring Airlines baggage example
Spring’s current conditions distinguish fare bundles. For tickets sold on or after 29 March 2026, its published table says:
- SpringSaver: one cabin item up to 7 kg and 20 × 30 × 40 cm; no free checked baggage;
- SpringFlexi: the named bundle may be sold with or without 20 kg checked baggage;
- SpringPlus: one cabin item up to 10 kg and 20 × 40 × 55 cm, plus 20 kg checked baggage.
Wheels, handles and pull rods are included in enforcement as described by the carrier, and excess-baggage prices vary by distance, channel and purchase time. Read the current Spring Airlines baggage terms for the actual ticket.
Do not reuse a generic “two pieces at 23 kg” rule for JAL, China Eastern or any other carrier. Allowance depends on carrier, cabin, fare, route, ticketing carrier and frequent-flyer status.
Compare the total trip cost

A cheap outbound plus expensive return can be worse than a balanced round trip. Search round-trip, two one-ways and open-jaw options, but never split tickets without pricing the missed-connection risk.
When to book
Book when a fully priced itinerary fits your budget and constraints. There is no airline rule that makes 30, 45 or 60 days universally cheapest.
Demand often rises around:
- Lunar New Year and Chinese school holidays;
- late-March to April cherry-blossom travel;
- China’s May Day and National Day periods;
- Japan’s Golden Week and Obon;
- summer holidays and year-end travel.
Cherry-blossom dates are weather-dependent. The old page’s exact “3–6 April full bloom” prediction and 30–40% saving after 7 April were presented as facts without a verifiable fare dataset. Choose the travel purpose first, then use flexible-date results to test adjacent days.

KIX arrival and Osaka transport
Choose ground transport by hotel location, arrival time and luggage:
- Nankai Railway is usually convenient for Namba and southern central Osaka.
- JR services can suit Tennoji, Osaka/Umeda and onward JR connections; the exact train and transfer depend on the destination.
- Limousine buses serve Osaka and other Kansai areas and can reduce transfers with large bags.
- Prebooked transfer or taxi can make sense for a group, very late arrival or substantial luggage, but compare the full vehicle cost.
KIX Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 are separate. The airport operates a free shuttle from Aeroplaza between them; KIX currently quotes about 7–9 minutes for the shuttle itself, excluding waiting and walking. Spring flights currently use Terminal 2, so include terminal time in a tight plan.
Use KIX’s live airport access planner rather than the former article’s stale fares and invented helicopter option. If a door-to-door ride is preferable, compare it through the site’s airport-transfer gateway.

- Passenger names match the travel documents exactly.
- Visa and entry requirements are checked separately; a ticket is not permission to enter Japan.
- Airports are PVG/KIX as intended, not a distant alternative created by city-code search.
- The operating carrier and terminals are identified for both directions.
- Cabin and checked baggage are read from the exact fare rules.
- Separate tickets have enough self-transfer time and a disruption plan.
- Change, cancellation and no-show rules are saved.
- KIX-to-hotel transport still operates after the expected arrival and immigration time.
- The final amount and currency—not the teaser price—fit the budget.

Which Shanghai airport should I use for Osaka?
PVG–KIX is the main nonstop international pairing. Search city codes for discovery, then verify the actual airports and ground transport before booking.
Is Spring always cheapest?
No. It may have the lowest base fare, but checked baggage, seats and flexibility can reverse the result. Compare like-for-like totals.
How early should I book cherry-blossom travel?
There is no guaranteed cheapest window. Start monitoring earlier for fixed dates and buy when the acceptable all-in itinerary appears. Do not rely on a single bloom forecast.
Is an open-jaw Osaka-in, Tokyo-out ticket better?
It can avoid backtracking, but compare the airfare plus intercity transport. A multi-city ticket on one booking may offer better disruption handling than unrelated one-way tickets.
