Bottom line: choose the route before the airline
For China–Los Angeles travel, check nonstop service for your dates, then compare protected one-ticket connections, and consider separate tickets only with a substantial saving and a generous buffer. The old page’s fixed $650 floor, daily schedules and “book 60–90 days ahead” rule were not supported by a reproducible dataset.
- Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen and other Chinese origins may show LAX nonstop service on selected dates; live schedules control.
- If nonstop is unavailable, a one-ticket connection generally carries less misconnection risk than self-transfer tickets.
- When fares are close, fewer connections, clear baggage rules and usable change terms matter more than a supposed “cheapest airline.”
- If LAX is followed by a U.S. domestic flight, allow for entry inspection, baggage collection, Customs and bag recheck.

Chinese carrier or foreign carrier?
Do not rank by nationality. Compare:
- nonstop versus connection on the long sector;
- operating carrier and current aircraft, not just the codeshare seller;
- protected ticket structure;
- baggage across every sector;
- refund, change, no-show and misconnection terms;
- arrival time and onward ground transport;
- booking-class eligibility for the mileage program you use.
The old claim that Chinese carriers were always 15–25% cheaper and U.S. carriers always had stronger disruption protection was too broad. Rights depend on seller, carrier, itinerary and applicable law.
Compare fares without fake averages
Build a like-for-like table
Delete the idea of a permanent annual low-fare chart. For identical dates and passengers, record:
- final tax-inclusive total;
- baggage, seats and meals;
- total elapsed time and connection count;
- protected versus separate tickets;
- refund and change cost.
When should you book?
No universal “60–90 day sweet spot” or Tuesday-departure discount applies to every China–U.S. market. A stronger process is:
- record three to five acceptable itineraries once dates are known;
- set alerts and watch the same specifications;
- secure an acceptable option earlier for summer, Lunar New Year, China’s National Day and year-end holidays;
- buy when fare, schedule and flexibility meet the trip’s budget.

Documents and transit: the U.S. has no general airside exemption
Chinese-passport tourists generally need an appropriate valid U.S. visa. Travellers merely connecting through a U.S. airport to another country also cannot assume that staying airside removes the visa requirement. The U.S. Department of State identifies immediate and continuous transit as a C-visa purpose; a valid visitor B visa may be usable for transit when its conditions are met. For connections through Japan, Korea, Canada, Hong Kong or another jurisdiction, check the official immigration rule for nationality, airport change, baggage collection and overnight plans before purchase.
First U.S. port of entry
When LAX is the first U.S. arrival, passengers generally complete immigration, collect checked baggage, clear Customs and return bags for a domestic connection. U.S. Customs and Border Protection explicitly says overseas arrivals must obtain baggage and bring it through CBP before checking it back for the next flight. See CBP’s connection guidance.
Limited route-specific or preclearance processes can differ, so follow the operating carrier and signs. Do not treat the published minimum connection time as a guarantee.

LAX to the city in 2026
The old page confused LAX-it with an inter-terminal shuttle and listed a nonexistent cheap Rapid 10 ride to Anaheim. Current choices are:
Union Station or Van Nuys: FlyAway
FlyAway runs direct buses between LAX terminals and Union Station or Van Nuys. The current official mobile-ticket guide lists a $9.75 one-way fare, but verify live schedules and prices. See the official FlyAway guide.
Metro
The LAX/Metro Transit Center is open, connecting the C and K Lines and several buses. A free airport shuttle runs roughly every ten minutes between the center and terminals. The official Metro page still describes the Automated People Mover as opening in 2026, so do not assume it is operating until the live page confirms that. See LA Metro’s current airport guide.
Metro’s current regular one-way fare is $1.75 with eligible transfers. Check operating hours for very early or late flights.
Taxi and rideshare
Follow current arrival-level signs to the assigned pickup area. Construction and terminal traffic plans change, and app quotes vary with congestion and demand.
Anaheim or Irvine
There is no universal $2.50 “Rapid 10” from every terminal. Compare a booked transfer, rental car, rideshare and multi-transfer public transport using live times. Direct transport is often more resilient after a late arrival or with several bags.
Baggage and seats: use the booked fare
Transpacific economy does not universally include two 23-kg bags. Basic economy, codeshares, domestic feeders and point-of-sale markets can differ. Save the checkout baggage display and verify it again in the operating airline’s manage-booking page.
Aircraft can also change. A 787, A350 or 777 model name alone does not prove seat width or layout; inspect the seat map for the flight and date. Recheck seats after any schedule notice.

Should I use LAX, ONT or SNA?
