Timing: The Sakura Forecast

Cherry blossom season varies by year — late March to mid-April. The Japan Meteorological Corporation publishes a weekly sakura forecast (sakura zensen) starting in February. 2026’s bloom was forecast for late March in Kyoto.

Book ryokans 4-6 months ahead for sakura season. The best fills by January.

Maruyama Park & Yasaka Shrine

Maruyama Park is Kyoto’s most famous cherry blossom spot. The towering weeping cherry tree (shidarezakura) at the park’s center is lit up at night — crowds are dense on weekends but magical on weekday evenings.

Philosophers Path

This 2km canal-side path connects Ginkaku-ji and Nanzen-ji temples through a corridor of樱花trees. Go at 6am. You’ll have it almost entirely to yourself, the canal water pink with fallen petals, the only sound birds and the occasional bicycle bell.
