Bottom line: The South Island is New Zealand’s natural crown jewel — the South Island’s road trip from Queenstown to Milford Sound covers 800km of the world’s most dramatic scenery. The route includes the Southern Alps, glacial lakes, fjords, and wine regions. Rent a car (QEEQ comparison essential), drive yourself, and take 10 days minimum.

New Zealand’s South Island contains 23 national parks and 13 UNESCO World Heritage sites — packed into an area roughly the size of England. The classic South Island circuit takes you through mountains, glaciers, lakes, and fjords. This guide covers the optimal 10-day self-drive route.

The Route: Queenstown to Milford Sound (and back)

Day 1-2: Queenstown & Around

Queenstown is the adventure capital of the world — bungee jumping, skydiving, jet boating, and skiing (Coronet Peak and The Remarkables in winter).

Key activities:

  • Bungee jumping at Kawarau Bridge (AJ Hackett — the original, NZD $195)
  • Fergburger — legendary burgers that justify the hype (arrive before 11pm or prepare for a queue)
  • Sunset at Lake Wakatipu’s eastern shore

Book Queenstown adventure activities in advance for popular items.

Day 3: Arrowtown & Gibbston Valley

15 minutes from Queenstown, Arrowtown is a preserved gold rush village. Gibbston Valley is New Zealand’s Pinot Noir heartland — cellar door tastings at:

  • Gibbston Valley Wines (original, cave-aged wines)
  • Peregrine (architectural cellar door)
  • Mt Rosa (small, excellent)

Day 4-5: Wanaka

1 hour from Queenstown, Wanaka is more laid-back than Queenstown with the same mountain scenery.

Must-do:

  • Roy’s Peak track (5 hours round trip) — the most photographed viewpoint in NZ (Wanaka tree + lake panorama)
  • That Wanaka Tree — the solitary willow tree growing in the lake, world’s most Instagrammed tree

Day 6: Mount Cook (Aoraki)

3.5 hours from Wanaka, Mount Cook National Park is home to New Zealand’s highest peak (3,724m) and the Tasman Glacier — the longest glacier in the Southern Hemisphere outside Antarctica.

Key hikes:

  • Hooker Valley Track (3 hours return) — easier, with iconic swingbridge and glacier lake
  • Sealy Tarns (4-5 hours) — steeper, insane views of Mount Cook

Stay: The Hermitage Hotel has glacier views from the window.

Day 7-8: Lake Tekapo to Christchurch

Lake Tekapo’s turquoise blue is caused by glacial flour suspended in the water. The Church of the Good Shepherd on the lakeshore is one of the most photographed churches in the world.

Detour: Mount John Summit for 360-degree views of the Mackenzie Basin (€15 drive up fee, or hike 1.5 hours).

Day 9-10: Fiordland — Milford Sound

This is the culmination — Milford Sound is a fjord carved by glaciers, with vertical cliffs rising 1,200m from the water.

Drive from Te Anau to Milford Sound (2 hours, SH94): One of the world’s most scenic drives, including the Homer Tunnel (1.2km, carved through solid granite in 1935).

On the water: Book a Milford Sound cruise — 2 hours through the fjord, past Stirling Falls and Mitre Peak. Rain is actually good — it creates thousands of temporary waterfalls.

Kayaking: For the best experience, add a kayaking add-on to your cruise (€35 extra, worth it).
