Norwegian Fjords Road Trip: Scenic Drives from Bergen to Geiranger
Norway’s fjords are on every serious traveler’s bucket list — and for good reason. The combination of glacier-carved valleys, waterfalls plunging from clifftops straight into the sea, and remote villages perched on narrow ledges creates one of the most dramatic landscapes on Earth. The best way to experience them? A self-drive road trip along Norway’s scenic routes, where every hairpin turn reveals another jaw-dropping view.
The Classic Route: Bergen to Geiranger
The ultimate Norwegian road trip follows this arc: Bergen → Voss → Gudvangen → Flåm → Lærdal → Grotfjord → Geiranger. This ~250km route takes 6-8 hours of driving time but should be stretched over 3-4 days minimum. Each fjord, village and viewpoint along the way deserves time to breathe.
Getting There: Fly into Bergen Flesland Airport (BGO), Norway’s second busiest. Car rentals at Bergen airport are competitive — use AutoEurope to compare prices, as Norwegian rental rates fluctuate wildly with season.
Stage 1: Bergen to Voss — The Scenic Railway Alternative
Start in Bergen, Norway’s colorful harbor city. The famous Bryggen wharf (UNESCO World Heritage) is worth a half-day visit, but don’t linger — the fjords are calling.
Drive east on E16 toward Voss (about 1.5 hours). Alternatively, take the famous Flåm Railway from Bergen to Flåm — this is considered one of the world’s most beautiful train journeys (2 hours), descending from mountain plateaus through waterfalls and valleys. Book in advance through Kiwi.com for better fares than the official NSB website.
Stage 2: Nærøyfjord — The Narrowest Fjord
The Nærøyfjord is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the narrowest fjord in Norway — at its narrowest point it’s just 250 meters wide with 1,700-meter-tall cliffs on either side. Drive to Gudvangen from Voss, then take the fjord ferry (2 hours, about 350 NOK) through the Nærøyfjord to Flåm. The ferry is covered by the Norway in a Nutshell day pass if you’re doing the full tourist route.
From Flåm, drive up to Stegastein — a dramatic viewpoint platform jutting out over the Aurlandsfjord. The view down to the fjord, village and surrounding peaks is one of Norway’s most photographed.
Stage 3: The Golden Route — Lærdal to Geiranger
From Flåm, drive the Lærdal Tunnel (24.5km — world’s longest road tunnel) to Lærdal, then continue on Route 13 toward Grotfjord and then Route 63 toward Geiranger. This is Norway’s most spectacular drive.
Trollstigen (The Troll’s Path) is the centerpiece — 11 hairpin turns descending 620 meters with waterfalls crashing down beside you. It’s open May-October weather permitting, and queues can be long in July-August. Arrive before 8am for a near-empty experience. Just after the toll road entrance is a viewing platform overlooking the entire serpentine descent — spectacular and terrifying at the same time.
Ørnesvingen (The Eagle’s Nest) is viewpoint #7 on the Geiranger Road, offering a sweeping panorama of Geirangerfjord. Most tour buses stop here, but walk another 100 meters down the road to the smaller platform — fewer people, same view.

Car Rental & Costs
Norway is expensive — expect to pay 700-1,200 NOK/day for a compact SUV in summer (June-August). Winter tires are mandatory October-April. Full insurance is non-negotiable — Norwegian repair costs are astronomical.
Fuel runs about 16-18 NOK/liter (~$1.50/liter). There are no highway tolls on scenic routes.
Where to Stay
Geiranger village has hotels ranging from basic guesthouses (800-1,200 NOK) to the iconic Hotel Geiranger (2,500+ NOK). Book 3-4 months ahead for July-August. The best value: Union Camp Yurt Camp just outside Geiranger, where you sleep in a Mongolian yurt with fjord views.
