Patagonia Trek

Patagonia is where the world goes to feel small. At the southern tip of South America, the Andes fracture into a maze of granite towers, turquoise lakes, and glaciers that crack and groan like the earth is breathing. Torres del Paine National Park is Patagonia’s crown jewel — a 181,414-hectare wilderness area where the weather changes five times before you finish a sentence.

The W Trek is the classic Patagonian徒步路线: a 4-5 day point-to-point hike that hits the park’s three main zones — the French Valley, Grey Glacier, and the Towers themselves — without the full O Circuit’s extra 5 days. It’s named for the shape the route traces on the map.

W Trek Route Breakdown

Day 1: Puerto Natales → Sector Las Torres Take a bus from Puerto Natales to the park’s Laguna Amarga entrance (2.5 hours, CLP$15,000). From there, take the shuttle to Hostería Las Torres. The hike to Base Las Torres is 2-3 hours each way, gaining 700m of elevation to reach the mirador — the three granite towers rising from a glacial lagoon.

This is the most photographed view in Patagonia. Sunrise (around 6:30-7:00am) is the golden hour when the towers glow orange. Most trekkers stay at Refugio Torre Norte or Camping Torres.

Day 2: Hostería → Camp Chileno → Mirador Base Torres → Paine Grande Start early — the mirador trail is steep but straightforward. Return to Hostería by midday and continue south to Paine Grande campsite (4-5 hours). Afternoon light on the Grey Glacier views from the trail are spectacular.

Day 3: French Valley The optional day — most trekkers skip it, but the French Valley is arguably the most beautiful section of the W. A 6-8 hour round trip from Paine Grande takes you into a glacial valley flanked by hanging glaciers and granite peaks. Bring rain gear — the valley is exposed and Patagonian wind and rain come without warning.

Day 4: Paine Grande → Grey Glacier → Paine Grande Half-day hike to the Grey Glacier viewpoint (3-4 hours round trip). The glacier calves into Lago Grey with deep blue icebergs floating in turquoise water. Kayak tours to the glacier face (€80-120) are worth the splurge.

Day 5: Paine Grande → Puerto Natales Final day: 4 hours to park entrance, then bus back to Puerto Natales.

Permits and Booking

Torres del Paine implemented mandatory advance booking in 2023. You’ll need:

  • Park entrance fee: CLP$21,000 (foreign visitors), bookable online
  • W Trek Circuit fee: CLP$35,000 additional for the full circuit (not needed for W)
  • Refugio/campsite bookings: Mandatory in high season (Dec-Feb), book months in advance at Torres del Paine booking

FreeOption: If you’re camping with your own gear, you still need to reserve your campsite slot (free, but required). This is the budget way to do the W.

Gear Essentials

Patagonia weather is notoriously fickle. Here’s your packing list:

Clothing (layering system):

  • Base layer: Merino wool t-shirt (not cotton — when wet it chills you)
  • Mid layer: Fleece or down jacket
  • Outer layer: Gore-Tex hard shell (non-negotiable — the wind will cut through everything else)
  • Rain pants: Not optional

Footwear: Waterproof hiking boots with ankle support. Trail runners work in summer but get soaked in spring/autumn.

Gear: 40-60L backpack, sleeping bag (0°C rated), headlamp, trekking poles (wind on exposed ridgelines is no joke).

Extras: Sunscreen (UV at altitude is brutal), blister plasters, water purification tablets.

Getting There

Puerto Natales is the gateway town. Fly from Santiago to Punta Arenas (3.5 hours), then take a bus to Puerto Natales (2.5 hours). Book Patagonia transport in advance during high season.

Best Season: December to February (Southern Hemisphere summer). December has wildflowers; January-February is warmest. March cools but sees fewer trekkers.

Budget Breakdown

ItemCost
Flights (Santiago → Punta Arenas)$200-400
Bus (Punta Arenas → Puerto Natales)$20-30
Park fees (all inclusive)$80-100
Refugio beds (4 nights)$200-350
Food (bring from Puerto Natales)$50-80
Total$550-960

Camping brings the total down significantly — refugio beds are the biggest expense.
