A decision-first Phuket guide to choosing a beach area and vetting island activities, checked against Thai tourism, airport and park sources.
The short answer: choose your Phuket base before buying tours. Patong suits nightlife and maximum convenience; Kata or Karon is a more balanced first choice for beach time and restaurants; Nai Yang or Mai Khao suits a quiet resort stay near the airport. Take an airport bus if its timetable and stop work for you, but price a pre-booked transfer when arriving late or with children and bulky luggage. Book one well-matched island day, not a checklist of islands.
Phuket is large enough that a cheap room in the wrong area can cost more in transfers and lost time. The Tourism Authority of Thailand lists beaches on both the busier south and quieter north coasts, so “Phuket hotel” is not a useful location by itself.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand’s Phuket page notes that southern beaches are generally busier while the north is more tranquil. It also tells swimmers to pay attention to red flags. A beach name is only the first filter: check the actual walking route, hills, road crossings and nearby dinner options before you book.
Once you have chosen one area, compare the same dates, occupancy, room terms and final price. A non-refundable room is not directly comparable with a flexible one.
Getting from HKT airport to your hotel
Phuket International Airport’s transport directory lists public buses, shuttles, taxis and car rental. The airport also publishes the Phuket Smart Bus, which serves west-coast stops including Patong, Karon and Kata. Timetables and fares can change; check the airport page on your travel day.

If public transport does not fit, compare the authorised airport taxi, hotel transfer and a reserved vehicle with explicit cancellation terms. No channel is guaranteed to be cheaper; compare the final quote for the same date and vehicle.
Do not treat a scooter as the default budget option. A rental shop handing over keys does not prove that your licence, insurance and experience meet Thai requirements. Phuket’s hills, bends and wet roads make a bus, taxi or car with driver the safer decision for many visitors.
Choose an island day by experience, not island count

Marine-park access can change for conservation, weather and safety. Do not copy last season’s opening dates into this year’s plan. Check Thailand’s Department of National Parks portal and require the booking terms to say what happens if the park or sea route closes.

A useful listing clearly states its pier, boat type, hotel pick-up zone, age or health restrictions and weather-cancellation policy. No marketplace is guaranteed to beat the operator’s direct price on every date.
Four checks before a sea activity
- Obey beach flags and the day’s operator warning; never swim through a red-flag closure.
- Confirm correctly sized life jackets and the operator’s child restrictions.
- Snorkelling, scuba and sea walking carry different risks; disclose medical conditions.
- If you get seasick, prioritise a shorter crossing instead of an extra island stop.
A realistic 4-day or 6-day plan
Four days
- Day 1: settle into one beach area and recover from the flight.
- Day 2: take one island or Phuket-based activity.
- Day 3: visit Old Town and focus on local food and culture.
- Day 4: keep the airport day free of remote boat trips.
Six days
- Spend the first three nights near your preferred beach and main activities.
- Keep one flexible day for weather disruption or rest.
- Move north for the final two nights only if a quieter resort stay is a distinct goal.
Changing hotels merely to sample another beach often creates more check-out, traffic and luggage time than value. Split the stay only when the two hotels serve clearly different purposes.
Entry rules, weather and booking checks
Entry permission depends on nationality and can change. Chinese ordinary-passport holders should use the separate Chinese guide and the current Thai embassy notice; other travellers should check the Thai embassy serving their country rather than relying on a generic “visa on arrival” claim. Thailand announced changes to parts of its visa-exemption framework in 2026, while separate bilateral arrangements continue, so old stay-length tables are unsafe.

- Hotel: final price, bedding, occupancy, cancellation deadline and resort fees;
- Transfer: meeting point, waiting policy, late-night charge and child seat;
- Activity: park fees, equipment, meals, pick-up zone and weather cancellation;
- Entry: passport validity and rules for your nationality on the travel date.
