Queenstown to Milford Sound: New Zealand’s Most Scenic Drive

The drive from Queenstown to Milford Sound covers approximately 360 kilometers and takes about 3.5-4 hours without stops. But “without stops” is not how you should approach this route. This is New Zealand’s most iconic road trip, where the journey itself is the destination.

Why Drive Instead of Fly or Tour?

  • Freedom to stop: There are hundreds of pull-offs, short walks, and photo opportunities
  • See weather changes: The weather in Fiordland changes rapidly — one moment it can be raining, the next the sun breaks through creating waterfalls
  • The Homer Tunnel: The 1.2km one-way tunnel with its avalanche sheds is an experience in itself
  • Cost effective: Driving costs about NZD $100-150 in fuel vs. $200-400 per person for tours

The Route

Queenstown to Te Anau (170km, ~2.5 hours)

The first section follows the edge of Lake Wakatipu, then cuts inland across the Southland farmland.

Highlights along the way:

  • Lake Wakatipu scenic pull-offs: Stop at any of the dozen viewpoint signs
  • Glenorchy: The “Lord of the Rings” village;optional detour to the Dart River Jetty
  • Kingston: Small town at the end of Lake Wakatipu with a vintage railway carriage
  • Mavora Lakes: Remote, pristine lakes (also LOTR filming location)
  • Te Anau: Gateway to Fiordland; spend the night here if you want an early start

Te Anau to Milford Sound (120km, ~2 hours)

This is the spectacular section:

Homer Tunnel: The Engineering Marvel

The 1.27km tunnel was carved through the solid granite of the Earl Mountains between 1935 and 1953. Today it remains a one-way tunnel controlled by traffic lights — expect 10-15 minute waits during peak season.

After the tunnel: The descent to Milford Sound is one of New Zealand’s most dramatic drives — steep switchbacks through avalanche terrain.

Milford Sound Itself

Milford Sound is actually a fjord (not a sound), created by glacial action. At 1692m, the peak of Mitre Peak rises directly from the seafloor — one of the tallest peaks in the world relative to its base.

  • Stirling Falls: Massive waterfall you can cruise beneath
  • Fjordland crested penguins: Endangered New Zealand penguins visible from the cruise
  • Seals and dolphins: Common sightings in the fjord

Alternative: Routeburn Track Day Hike

If you have more time, the Routeburn Track is one of New Zealand’s “Great Walks” and offers extraordinary views:

This can be done as a day hike without overnight hut booking, unlike the full track.
