Singapore: Asia’s Cleanest City

Singapore is the easiest introduction to Asia—a city-state where everything works, English is the first language, and food is spectacular. It’s also expensive.

Must-do:

  • Marina Bay Sands/Gardens by the Bay: The futuristic skyline is iconic. Gardens by the Bay (supertrees, cloud forest, flower dome) $20–$28. Free to view the Supertrees at night (light show 7:45pm + 8:45pm).
  • Hawker centers: This is Singapore’s soul. Try Maxwell Food Centre (near Chinatown) or Lau Pa Sat (downtown). Chicken rice $3, char kway teow $5, Nasi lemak $4.
  • Chinatown, Little India, Kampong Glam: Three distinct neighborhoods, each walkable for 2–3 hours. Free to explore.
  • Sentosa Island: Universal Studios Singapore ($80), S.E.A. Aquarium ($40), beach clubs. Take the monorail ($4) from mainland.

Best Michelin dining on a budget: Hawker Chan (soy sauce chicken rice, Michelin star, $2.50) and Liao Fan Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice & Noodle (Hong Kong, Michelin 1-star, $3).

Hong Kong: Controlled Chaos

Hong Kong is a city of extremes—skyscrapers stacked on steep hills, street markets next to luxury malls, dim sum alongside Michelin-starred restaurants. Its British colonial infrastructure mixed with Chinese energy makes it unique.

Must-do:

  • Victoria Peak: The Peak Tower ($10–$15 for observation deck). Go for sunset, stay for the night view. Take the historic Peak Tram (the steepest funicular in the world, $13 round trip).
  • Temple Street Night Market: Free. Loud, chaotic, fun. Street food, fortune tellers, cheap electronics. Goes until midnight.
  • Dim sum: Tim Ho Wan’s Michelin-starred pork buns ($5 for 3) is the world’s cheapest Michelin meal.常规点心 (regular dim sum) at most dai pai dong restaurants is $8–$15/person.
  • Lantau Island: Big Buddha (Ngong Ping 360 cable car, $25) and Po Lin Monastery. One full day trip.
  • Hiking Dragon’s Back: Free. Hong Kong’s most popular hike (8km, 3 hours). Starts at Shek O Country Park. Metro to Shau Kei Wan, then bus 9 to Toi Wan.

Book Hong Kong attractions onKlook—USS, Peak Tram, Ngong Ping 360 all discounted.

Best food: Hong Kong is the world’s greatest food city on a budget. Dai pai dong (open-air food stalls, mostly in Wan Chai/Central) are $8–$15 per person. Michelin-rated eateries in Mong Kok are $5–$10. Pineapple buns, egg tarts, milk tea—explore Sham Shui Po and Mong Kok for the best street food.

Which to Choose?

Choose Singapore if: You’re a first-time Asia visitor. You want English-friendly navigation. You appreciate planning and order. Hawker centers excite you. You’re bringing kids (Sentosa is brilliant for families).

Choose Hong Kong if: You’ve been to Asia before. You love chaos, energy, and street markets. Hiking is on your agenda. You want to explore nearby Macau. You want better nightlife (cheaper than Singapore).

Do both: Fly into one, out of the other. SIN→HKG is 4 hours. HKG→SIN is 4 hours. Budget $80–$120 for the flight.
