Bottom Line: Thailand’s southern islands each serve a different crowd. Koh PhiPhi: party + scenery (Maya Bay is worth it if you get there before 8am). Koh Lanta: families + laid-back digital nomads. Koh Lipe: diving purists who don’t need much infrastructure. Ferry between them is €15-35/person, 1-3 hours. Peak season is November-February; shoulder seasons offer 40-60% lower prices.

Thailand’s southern islands are the country’s tourism engine — and they’re very different from each other. Picking the wrong one for your travel style can ruin a week.

Koh PhiPhi: The Icon

PhiPhi is the island that launched a thousand Instagram posts. Maya Bay (Leh Mah in Thai) was closed 2018-2022 for ecological recovery and has reopened with a quota system.

How to visit Maya Bay properly:

  • Book a boat tour that departs BEFORE 7:30am
  • First groups of the day have the bay nearly to themselves
  • Afternoon quota fills up fast — expect crowds

Pre-book Maya Bay access tickets via Klook to secure your spot and avoid sold-out days.

PhiPhi logistics:

  • No cars/motorbikes on the island — everything is by foot or boat
  • Accommodation books out fast in peak season (Dec-Feb)
  • Slow boat from Krabi: 2 hours, €8-12
  • Speedboat from Krabi: 45 minutes, €25-40

Koh Lanta: The Family Choice

Lanta sits off Krabi Province’s west coast, more laid-back and less discovered than PhiPhi. It’s flat compared to most Thai islands — good for cyclists and strollers.

Best beaches:

  • Klong Dao Beach: Long, sandy, family-friendly
  • Klong Khong Beach: Mid-island, backpacker area, good bars
  • Klong Nin Beach: Quieter, local restaurants

Getting there:

  • Ferry from PhiPhi: 1.5 hours, €12-18
  • Longtail taxi from Krabi: 30 min + 20 min ferry

Koh Lipe: Diving Paradise

Lipe — “The Maldives of Thailand” — is the most remote and least developed of the three. It’s a diving-first destination.

Why people come: World-class diving. Hin Ngam and Koh Yang dive sites offer珊瑚礁 sharks, rays, and turtles. The island sits within the Tarutao National Marine Park.

Logistics:

  • Speedboat from Pak Barra (mainland): 2 hours, €25-35
  • Only 3 main beaches — walking the island takes 20 minutes
  • No ATM on the island (2025) — bring enough cash

Monsoon Season Reality Check

Common misconception: Monsoon season doesn’t mean it rains all day. Expect afternoon showers, often 1-2 hours, then sunshine. Sea conditions can be rough for boat transfers.
