Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh Highway (QL1 through the old Route 1) stretches 1,700km from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City. For adventurous travelers, completing it on a motorbike — either solo or as part of an organized tour — is one of Southeast Asia’s great overland journeys.
The Route Overview
💡 Travel essential: Skip the SIM hunt at arrival — grab an Airalo eSIM covering 200+ countries with one-tap activation, 30–50% cheaper than airport SIMs.
The Classic Route: Hanoi → Hue → Hoi An → Nhatrang → Dalat → Mekong Delta → Ho Chi Minh City
Total distance: ~1,700 km Estimated time: 14-21 days (at a reasonable pace) Best months: November to February (dry season, cooler temperatures)
Key Sections
Section 1: Hanoi to Hue (500 km, 2-3 days)
Highlights:
- Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park: UNESCO-listed caves, including Hang Sơn Đoòng (world’s largest cave — requires a separate 3-4 day expedition, €1,500+ per person)
- DMZ (Demilitarized Zone): Vinh Moc tunnels, Khe Sanh Combat Base — history not taught in Western schools
- Hue: Imperial Citadel, royal tombs, and the Perfume River
Route note: The Hai Van Pass (Himalayan Pass) between Hue and Da Nang is the iconic section — 21km of mountain road with panoramic views of the coast. Best ridden early morning to avoid trucks.
Section 2: Hoi An and Da Nang (rest days)
Hoi An is the perfect rest stop — a beautifully preserved ancient trading port, famous for tailor-made clothes (2-day delivery, excellent quality, very affordable) and Vietnamese cuisine.
Don’t miss:
- Hoi An night market (Lanterns everywhere, genuinely magical)
- My Son sanctuary (Hindu temples, similar to Angkor Wat but less crowded)
- Cao Lau noodles (only found in Hoi An, can’t replicate elsewhere)
Section 3: South to Nha Trang and Dalat (400 km, 2-3 days)
Nha Trang: Beach city with decent diving and the famous mud baths. Good for one night but not worth lingering.
Dalat: The “City of Eternal Spring” — 1,500m elevation, French colonial hill station, and adventure sports hub. Motorbike tours of the surrounding coffee plantations and waterfalls are excellent.
Section 4: Dalat to Ho Chi Minh City via Mekong Delta (400 km, 2-3 days)
Mekong Delta: The “Rice Bowl of Vietnam” — a maze of rivers, floating markets, and lush rice paddies. The road through is flat, hot, and lined with fruit stands selling dragon fruit, mangoes, and rambutan.
Recommended stop: Can Tho for the floating market (Cai Rang) — go at 5 AM before the crowds.
Practical Planning
To Ride Solo or Join a Tour?
Solo: Rent a motorbike in Hanoi (€8-15/day for a Honda Win or XR150). You’ll need an International Driving Permit with motorbike endorsement. Vietnamese traffic is chaotic — horn constantly, don’t expect cars to see you.
Guided tour: Companies like “Vietnam Motorbike Tours” (VMT) organize group tours with support vehicle. Cost: €60-100/day all-inclusive. Better for: inexperienced riders, those short on time, or who don’t want to deal with logistics.
Gear Checklist
- Full-face helmet (mandatory, often poor quality of local rentals)
- Rain jacket (seasonal)
- Buff/neck gaiter (dust on unpaved sections)
- Padlock (motorbike theft is common)
- Sunscreen (you will burn even through clouds)
- First aid kit
Visa Note
Vietnam requires a visa for most nationalities. E-visa (single entry, 30 days) is the easiest option — apply online at least 1 week before travel. Don’t overstay.
