Air China Child Fares for Ages 2–11: Look Beyond 50%

The most common mistake when booking Air China for a child aged 2–11 is assuming that “child fare” always means half of the adult’s checkout price. Domestic child fares do use a benchmark tied to the ordinary adult fare, but lower promotional products may be available on the same flight. International and regional travel cannot be reduced to a universal 75% formula.

The useful comparison is the total price, conditions and services actually offered for the child on the same itinerary. Do not calculate an expected discount first and assume the checkout page is wrong.

Start with age on the flight date

An infant travelling on a lap still needs a ticket and a confirmed place in the booking. Use the China infant-ticket checklist for that separate decision.

Domestic child fare: 50% is a benchmark, not always the lowest sale price

Air China’s current domestic conditions state that an eligible child may buy a child ticket at 50% of the ordinary adult fare on the same flight and receive a seat. They also allow children to buy other lower-fare tickets, in which case the conditions attached to that fare apply. (Air China domestic fare and refund conditions)

That creates a real choice:

• a standard child fare has the child-fare basis and its corresponding rules;
• a lower promotional product may cost less but have different change, refund, booking-class or service conditions;
• the lowest adult result is not proof that the same product can be issued to a child, and the child must never be entered as an adult to bypass the booking flow.

Search through Air China or a seller that correctly records the child’s date of birth, place every traveller in the same enquiry, and compare the live family total and conditions. If another fare product appears attractive, ask Air China or the ticketing agent to confirm that it can be issued for the child, how the passenger type is recorded and what airport services apply. Buying under the wrong passenger type and trying to correct it later can require re-ticketing.

International and regional travel: no universal 75% promise

Air China’s international conditions define the applicable fare by the published fare and conditions valid for the particular flight, date, cabin and routing when the ticket is bought. Child treatment can vary by market and product; “every international child ticket is 75% of the adult fare” is not a reliable rule. (Air China international conditions of carriage)

For an international family booking, expand and compare at least:

1. the child’s base fare and taxes;
2. baggage allowance for each traveller;
3. refund, date-change and route-change conditions;
4. the ability to request adjacent seating in the same booking;
5. the operating carrier and child-service policy for every codeshare sector.

Do not budget from a fixed old example for Beijing–Tokyo or Beijing–Frankfurt. Season, inventory, exchange rates, taxes and carrier combinations change. Only the current family checkout total supports the current decision.

Documents: carry the same valid original used in the booking

A child needs a travel document accepted for the origin, destination and route. Name, document number and date of birth must match the booking. A mainland domestic flight and an international flight have different document requirements; the latter also requires checking passport validity, visa or travel authorisation and destination rules for minors.

“A birth certificate plus household registration always works” is unsafe advice. A birth certificate may prove a relationship but does not automatically replace a passport, visa or accepted air-travel identity document. A child travelling with one parent, a non-parent adult or alone may also need consent evidence required by the destination or transit authority. Confirm separately with Air China, border authorities and official destination sources, and carry the original document used for booking.

Baggage, seats and meals: read the ticket

A child aged two or older occupies a seat, but baggage still depends on route, cabin, fare product and operating carrier. Do not assume that every Air China child in economy receives two 23 kg pieces, or infer an allowance from the accompanying adult. Open the baggage field for each passenger in the order or e-ticket; a codeshare can add a different governing rule.

Request family seating early. A paid-seat map does not make every seat available to a child; exit-row and other safety restrictions still apply. Child meals and other special services require advance requests on eligible flights, and a request is not the same as a confirmed service.

Refunds and changes follow the purchased fare

“Refundable” does not mean free, and there is no universal rule that a child ticket is free to cancel until 24 hours before departure and then costs 10%–20%. Air China’s domestic rules vary by booking class, product and timing. If the child uses another lower fare, that product’s restrictions apply.

Before payment, capture the conditions for every passenger and check:

• whether adult and child use different products, making the same new flight difficult to rebook;
• whether a date change has both a fee and a fare difference;
• which evidence applies to voluntary refund, carrier cancellation or a medical exception;
• how partially used return or multi-sector value is calculated.

Unaccompanied travel is a separate service

A child travelling alone needs more than an ordinary child ticket. Air China’s unaccompanied-minor service has conditions for age, route, connection, operating carrier, flight capacity and the delivering and receiving adults. Confirm that the complete itinerary is eligible and complete the service request before locking in the ticket. Do not rely on an old fixed fee or quota.

The delivering adult should remain as instructed until the flight departs or the airline releases them. The receiving adult’s name, telephone number and identity document must match the application. Reconfirm the service after any itinerary change.

A six-step family booking method

1. Calculate age on every sector and identify any second or twelfth birthday between flights.
2. Enter the true number and dates of birth of all adults, children and infants in one search.
3. Compare the family total, not an isolated “child discount.”
4. Expand baggage and change conditions for every passenger and record the operating carriers.
5. Check document numbers, dates of birth and spelling before payment.
6. After ticketing, verify ticket numbers, passenger types, every sector and requested services.

Pre-payment checklist

• Age and child or infant passenger type are correct on each travel date.
• The child’s real date of birth and valid document are in the booking.
• Standard child and permitted promotional products were compared by total and conditions.
• No fixed 75% formula was imposed on an international itinerary.
• Baggage appears for each traveller in the order.
• Refund, change and fare-difference conditions are saved.
• The operating carrier is known for each codeshare sector.
• Seating, child meal or unaccompanied service has a clear status.
