For holders of ordinary PRC passports, do not rely on the old article’s “visa-free for 30 days” statement. Indonesia’s official immigration sources list China among Visa on Arrival/e-VOA eligible nationalities. Current VOA/e-VOA conditions, passport validity, onward ticket and extension rules must be checked before travel. Foreign tourists to Bali also generally pay the separate Rp150,000 Bali tourist levy, unless exempt.

The old “no direct flights” explanation was false
The previous page said no mainland-China nonstop service existed because narrow-body aircraft could not fly the distance, Indonesian airspace restrictions and route immaturity. Those explanations were unsupported. Modern narrow-body aircraft can operate many routes of comparable length, and route availability is a commercial/regulatory schedule question—not something this site should invent.
It also described a December 2025 Guangzhou charter as if it were a reliable 2026 planning fact. A charter allocation is not the same as a published scheduled flight.
Use this hierarchy:
- live flight search for the date;
- operating airline timetable;
- airport departure/arrival status near travel;
- written ticket confirmation.
Filter for nonstop, because search platforms sometimes use “direct” for a flight number that includes a stop.
Which China airports should you compare?
Search the airport you can reach reliably, then test alternatives only after adding positioning cost.
Beijing and northern China
Confirm the airport code and domestic positioning journey. A cheaper departure from another city can become more expensive after an extra flight, hotel and separate-ticket risk.
Shanghai and eastern China
Most international results use Pudong (PVG), but always read the ticket. Do not construct a tight connection assuming PVG and Hongqiao (SHA) are one airport.
Guangzhou, Shenzhen and Hong Kong
Pearl River Delta travellers can compare CAN, SZX and HKG, but border/ground transport, baggage and departure time belong in the total cost. Hong Kong is not merely a free substitute origin.
Chengdu, Chongqing, Hangzhou, Xiamen and other cities
A one-stop through-ticket may beat a long positioning journey to a nonstop airport. Search flexible dates and confirm whether the itinerary is protected on one ticket.
The old tables of fixed city prices and journey times were not tied to bookable flights and have been removed.
Nonstop versus one-stop
Nonstop advantages
- shorter elapsed time;
- fewer baggage and misconnection points;
- easier travel with children or limited mobility;
- less exposure to transit-document changes;
- simpler disruption handling.
One-stop advantages
- more date and departure-city options;
- sometimes a better fare or schedule;
- ability to choose a preferred airline;
- possible stopover when intentionally planned.
The self-transfer warning
A result assembled from separate tickets can require immigration, baggage collection, terminal transfer and re-checking. If the first flight is late, the second airline may have no obligation to rebook you.
Before buying, confirm:
- one ticket number/booking protection or separate tickets;
- baggage tagged to DPS;
- transit airport and terminal change;
- entry/transit permission if baggage must be collected;
- minimum connection time plus a disruption buffer;
- overnight accommodation and airport transport.
“Same airline” or “same alliance” does not automatically guarantee through-checked baggage.
Full-service versus low-cost
The previous article attached generic baggage, meal and on-time percentages to broad airline categories. Fare families now vary enough that the label alone is not useful.
Calculate for every passenger:
base fare + cabin baggage above allowance + checked baggage + seat + meal + payment fee + connection/overnight cost + change risk
Check the exact fare for:
- operating carrier on each segment;
- cabin and checked-baggage allowance;
- seat assignment timing/cost;
- meal and water inclusion;
- change, cancellation and no-show rules;
- support responsibility when booked through an OTA;
- arrival time and Bali hotel transfer.
A full-service fare can be cheaper after bags; a low-cost fare can be ideal for a light traveller with fixed dates. There is no universal winner.
How to find a better fare
The old “March index 70, August 160” curve, “book 60–90 days” rule and open-jaw savings of CNY 800–1,300 were not backed by a reproducible data set.
Use this workflow:
- search a flexible date range;
- compare nonstop with sensible one-stop results;
- add every bag and seat;
- compare nearby origins only after positioning cost;
- avoid unsafe self-transfers;
- save exact flight numbers and fare family;
- verify on the operating airline site;
- buy when total cost and rules fit.
Start earlier for Lunar New Year, China’s national holidays, summer school breaks, Christmas/New Year and major Bali events. Monitoring earlier reduces risk; it does not guarantee one “cheapest” day.

Indonesia entry for PRC ordinary passports
VOA/e-VOA, not blanket visa-free
Indonesia’s immigration materials include China among nationalities eligible for Visa on Arrival. Official guidance describes VOA/e-VOA as a 30-day stay permission that can generally be extended once for another 30 days, subject to current rules.
Entry permission and extension policy can change. Check the official immigration/eVisa site for the passport and travel purpose immediately before purchase and departure.
Basic documents
Indonesia Immigration’s current FAQ lists:
- a valid nationality passport with at least six months’ validity;
- a return ticket or onward ticket;
- the applicable VOA/e-VOA application and payment.
An e-VOA approval does not guarantee admission; the immigration officer decides entry. Work, study and other activities require the correct visa.
Use only the official Indonesian eVisa portal and Immigration FAQ. Avoid paid lookalike sites.
Bali tourist levy is separate
The Bali Provincial Government states that foreign tourists generally pay a Rp150,000 per-person levy. It is separate from the Indonesian visa/VOA fee and from airline taxes.
The official Love Bali FAQ says payment can be made through the Love Bali system or authorised channels, and qualifying categories can be exempt. Keep the QR-code voucher and check whether an exemption requires advance application.

Arrival and hotel transfer
DPS traffic can make a short map distance slow. Compare:
- official airport transport/current taxi options;
- app-based transport pickup rules;
- hotel-arranged transfer;
- a pre-booked airport transfer.
Match the transfer to arrival time, terminal, group size, child seats and luggage. Do not book a transfer from “Bali” without the exact hotel area.
