Greece has 6,000+ islands, of which ~227 are inhabited. The Cyclades — the island chain between Athens and Crete — contains the most famous: Santorini and Mykonos. But the secret of Greek island hopping is the lesser-known islands between them, which offer better beaches, authentic food, and half the price.

The Classic: Santorini and Mykonos

Santorini: The caldera views are genuinely iconic — whitewashed cave houses stacked on the cliff edge, blue domes, sunsets that turn the entire sky orange. Two days minimum:

  • Oia: The famous sunset village — arrive 2 hours before sunset to get a spot on the castle walls
  • Fira to Oia hike: 10km along the caldera rim, the best way to see the island
  • Akrotiri: Ancient Minoan city, preserved under volcanic ash — the Greek Pompeii
  • Red Beach: Strange red volcanic sand, good snorkeling

Mykonos: Party island, beautiful beaches, less authentic Greek feel:

  • Super Paradise Beach: The famous beach club scene — daytime partying, DJs, go-go dancers
  • Psarou Beach: Celebrity beach, €30-50 sunbed rental
  • Little Venice: Windmill neighborhood, sunset views equal to Santorini but without the crowds

The Secret: Folegandros and Sifnos

Between the two famous islands lie Cycladic gems:

Folegandros (2h from Santorini by ferry): Tiny island with one main town (Chora) built on a cliff, a gorgeous main square with lit candlelight at night. No cruise ships stop here. Chora is fully walkable. Best seafood at To Kati Allo (by the church, cash only).

Sifnos (3h from Folegandros): Known for pottery and cycling. Beautiful remote beaches on the southern coast. Kamares beach is wide and golden, Vlychos is more intimate. The island has excellent food — Sifnos is considered one of the Cyclades’ culinary capitals.

Milos (off the beaten track entirely): The most volcanic of the Cyclades, famous for its otherworldly rock formations. Sarakiniko beach — white volcanic rock sculpted by the sea, looks like a moonscape. Best for those who’ve been to Greece before and want something completely different.

Ferry Booking: The Greek System

Greece’s ferries are operated by multiple companies: Seajets (fast catamarans), Blue Star (slower, larger ferries, cheaper), and Golden Star Ferries.

For island hopping in 2026, use Klook to book inter-island ferries — it aggregates schedules from all operators and lets you compare. Book at least 2 weeks ahead in July-August.

Cyclades Flexi Pass: If you’re doing 4+ island hops, the Cyclades Pass covers most routes within a 5-day window and can save 20-30%.

Best Time to Visit

  • May-June: Best — warm enough to swim, wildflowers still blooming, accommodation 30% cheaper than July-August
  • July-August: Peak, hot (35°C+), all prices spike, ferries crowded
  • September-October: Water still warm (24°C), fewer tourists, some ferry schedules reduce

Budget: Greek Islands on $100/Day

Greece is not cheap in summer, but the islands are more affordable than Athens:

  • Accommodation: Studio in Chora (main town) of a lesser-known island, ~€60-100/night
  • Food: Taverna lunch by the sea ~€15-20/person; cook your own breakfast from the supermarket
  • Ferry: Book early for the cheapest fares; slow ferries are half the price of catamarans
