Turkish Airlines Istanbul Connection 2026: IST Transit Visa, Touristanbul and Free Hotel

If you hold a PRC ordinary passport, Türkiye's Ministry of Foreign Affairs says you are exempt from visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period as of 2 January 2026. Staying in the transit area on one ticket means no further passport procedures. Touristanbul (the free city tour) and the connection hotel both need you to enter Türkiye.

Visa and passport rules for a PRC ordinary passport

Staying in the transit area

Turkish Airlines' Transfer and Transit page defines transit passengers as those with a confirmed single ticket itinerary who are stopping at an intermediate airport, and says: "Typically, transit passengers do not pass through immigration or leave the airport’s transit area." A transfer passenger on one ticket from an international flight to another takes the cabin bag, leaves the aircraft and goes to the gate, with no further passport procedures.

The Turkish Airlines Istanbul Airport FAQ (section B3, question 4) asks whether you need a visa to exit from the transit area. It answers: "There is no change in the application, there is no need to obtain a visa." That FAQ shows no date, and parts of it still refer to Atatürk Airport.

The pages do not cover the entry rules of your onward destination; ask the airline.

Leaving the airport

The MFA page says PRC nationals with an ordinary passport are exempt from visa up to 90 days in any 180 day period as of 2 January 2026; official passport holders are exempt for stays of up to 30 days. The line names no purpose of travel, and this guide adds none.

The e-Visa system is separate. The MFA page says an e-Visa is valid only when the purpose of travel is tourism or commerce. A PRC ordinary passport holder under the exemption does not need to apply for one.

Touristanbul and the hotel service both require entry into Türkiye. The Touristanbul FAQ says to sign up "after passing through passport and customs controls"; the Hotel service page says hotel services "are unavailable in the transit area" and that you are responsible for the entry requirements.

Passport validity

The MFA page gives two statements, and they are not the same:

• It advises you to have a passport "valid for at least 6 months as from the date of your arrival in Türkiye".
• As of 1 January 2015, under the Law on Foreigners and International Protection, the passport must expire at least 60 days beyond the "duration of stay" of your visa, e-Visa, visa exemption or residence permit. Example: a 90-day stay plus 60 days means 150 days of validity at entry.

The page does not say which one border officers apply. Check your passport against both.

How an international connection works at IST

IST is Istanbul Airport, operated by iGA. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is a different airport; the pages give no transfer details between the two, and the Touristanbul FAQ says no tours depart from Sabiha Gökçen.

What you do depends on the ticket. This table follows the Turkish Airlines Transfer and Transit page for international-to-international trips.

The footnote to the page's separate-ticket row also excludes: "passengers traveling on Turkish Airlines on flights to Hong Kong, Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo, Bangkok, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Kuala Lumpur flights with a connection to Taiwan (TPE-KHH-RMQ) via a foreign airline". It does not say whether collecting bags on separate tickets means going through passport control. The Istanbul Airport FAQ (B2, question 10, undated) describes the route after an international arrival as the passport counters on the transfer level, then the stairs down to baggage claim, but it does not say that this route is for passengers on separate tickets; ask the airline before you book.

How much time you need

None of the official pages listed below gives a minimum connection time for IST or for Turkish Airlines. The Transfer and Transit page defines a transfer passenger as someone "stopping for less than 24 hours at an intermediate airport". The Istanbul Airport FAQ (B3, question 13, undated) says passengers with less than 90 minutes left to an international connecting flight have "hotpoint security ports" in each pier and can use short-term ports to reach the departures level.

Walking the route

The Istanbul Airport FAQ (B3, question 10, undated) says: go from the arrivals level to the transfer passengers' level, pass the transfer security points in the middle of that level, take the stairs up to the international departures level, and follow the flight information boards. iGA's Transfer Desks page puts the transfer desks opposite the international-to-international transfer security checkpoint. The Istanbul Airport FAQ (B3, question 6, undated) says passengers connecting from one international flight to another can use the Transfer Desk office at the entrance of Pier D, on the transfer level, 24/7. The pages give no walking times.

Touristanbul, the free city tour

Touristanbul is a free city tour for Turkish Airlines passengers connecting from one international flight to another with a layover of 6 to 24 hours at Istanbul Airport, if the flight times fit the tour times. The page says "As of May 1, 2026, our daily tours have been updated".

The Touristanbul page says four routes; its FAQ says "six different tours every day" and lists the same four.

Who can join (page and FAQ):

• A Turkish Airlines ticket number starting with 235, from any sales channel. Turkish Airlines-ticketed codeshare flights operated by another airline count; another airline's codeshare tickets operated by Turkish Airlines do not.
• Departure and arrival flights under the same PNR.
• At least 1 hour 25 minutes between the end of the tour and your next flight.
• One tour per layover (on a round trip, one on each layover). Under-18s must be with an adult. Wheelchair users need a companion without disabilities who provides any help needed when boarding, getting off or during the ride; the tour bus may not have a ramp.
• N and R class tickets provided by Turkish Airlines can join; N and R class tickets provided to Turkish Airlines or other airline staff cannot.

How to book. Enter your PNR or ticket number and last name on the Turkish Airlines page to see the tours you qualify for. Everyone, including people with an online booking, must report to the registration desk at least 30 minutes before the tour; if you qualify but online booking fails during a system update, you can still join by going to the desk 30 minutes before the tour. Reaching the desk from the arrival gate takes about 45 minutes, including passport control (page and FAQ).

Where to go. The Tour Registration Desk is in the Arrivals Hall opposite meeting point number 4, next to the Hotel Desk. The Information Desk in the transfer area can tell you whether you qualify but cannot make a reservation (FAQ).

What is included. The FAQ lists transport, an English-speaking guide, a meal (it may vary by tour schedule; vegetarian and vegan options exist) and museum entrance fees. Tours are in English, with no capacity limit. On the Touristanbul page, the route shown under the tour schedules (Taksim Square to Dolmabahçe Palace) is described as "a panoramic tour conducted without getting off the vehicle" with "no entrance to any museums"; the page does not say which of the four tours that route is, and it also says guests visit historical sites free of charge. The FAQ accepts pets, in cages of certain sizes, only on the 08:00-11:30 Sightseeing Tour and refuses them on the other tours because of "the rules of museums and places of worship"; neither page says which tours enter museums. This guide does not pick one.

Rules to know.

• Touristanbul and Stopover cannot be used in the same waiting period (Touristanbul page); the Stopover page words it as: Stopover passengers cannot use Touristanbul "on the same route". Touristanbul and the hotel service cannot be used in the same layover (FAQ), but on a round trip you can use Touristanbul again, or the hotel, on another layover if you meet its conditions.
• Bags can stay in the tour vehicle at your own risk (not electronics or valuables), or go to an airport-run left-luggage office next to the registration desk for a fee.
• If you leave the tour early, you arrange your own way to the airport and sign the tour departure form.
• If the tour bus is late because of unforeseen circumstances and you miss your flight, Turkish Airlines rebooks you on the next available flight at no charge.

Connection hotel service

The Hotel service page invites passengers transferring between international flights through Istanbul Airport to complimentary accommodation during the layover, including transport between the airport and the hotel. For Economy passengers with layovers "exceeding 12 hours" it offers airport-hotel transfers and one meal at the hotel.

Terms from the page:

• Economy with a layover of "12 hours or more", and Business with a layover of nine hours or more, are eligible if a shorter layover flight option is not available for the route. The page words the Economy threshold two ways: "exceeding 12 hours" in the introduction and "12 hours or more" in the terms.
• If a shorter layover flight is available, you cannot use the hotel "even if that flight is fully booked". The page's example: a search for Dubai to New York (JFK) on 31 October may show the last Dubai-Istanbul flight that day and an Istanbul-New York flight on 1 November, but a Dubai-Istanbul departure at 02:50 on 1 November connects to a same-morning Istanbul-New York flight, so that route has no hotel.
• Layover time is the gap between the first flight's arrival and the next flight's departure.
• You might receive up to two nights. Passengers who change their ticket may not qualify.
• The service covers connecting international flights through airports in Türkiye on the same confirmed ticket, including codeshare flights where Turkish Airlines is the carrier airline.
• Under-18s are not allowed into hotels unless with an adult. Turkish Airlines picks the hotel from its contracted hotels; the page names none.

An eight-hour Economy layover is below the 12 hours the page gives, and nothing on the page guarantees a hotel.

Apply at the Hotel Desk office inside the terminal on the arrivals level. The page gives no opening hours. The undated Istanbul Airport FAQ (B2, question 8) says the Hotel Desk and Touristanbul offices are open 24/7 on the right side of the greeters' hall.

Stopover Istanbul

Stopover Istanbul is a separate product from the connection hotel, with different conditions.

• Layover: international origin to international destination via Istanbul Airport, at least 20 hours and up to 7 days (168 hours).
• How to apply: after ticketing, at least 72 hours before the flight on which you will use the hotel, through the page's "Booker" link or by e-mail to the address for your country of departure. For China the page lists freehotelchina@thy.com; Hong Kong and Taiwan are separate entries.
• What you get: bed and breakfast at contracted hotels. Economy gets 1 night in a 4-star hotel; Business gets 2 nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel. If your first departure point on the round-trip ticket is Mainland China (excluding Hong Kong), Taiwan, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea or the USA, Economy gets 2 nights in a 4-star hotel and Business gets 3 nights in a 5-star or boutique hotel.
• Ticket: round trip, connecting through Istanbul Airport on both the outbound and return flights, with both in the same reservation; separate tickets are not accepted. All flights must be operated by Turkish Airlines; codeshare flights are not eligible. Ticket number starts with 235. N and R fare classes are not eligible.
• Other conditions: the journey must start in a country on the page's list (China is on it); use it once, outbound or return. The country where the journey begins and the country where it ends must be the same. Unaccompanied under-18s are not eligible. The nights must be consecutive. The hotel voucher must be issued before the journey; applications after arrival in Istanbul are not eligible.
• Not included: airport-hotel transfers and local transport.
• Hotel and bags: hotels are allocated from quotas; a specific hotel is not guaranteed. If the layover exceeds 24 hours, collect your bags at the international terminal baggage claim. Entry documents are your responsibility. Turkish Airlines may amend the terms.

Which should you choose

Start with your ticket, then your layover.

• Separate tickets. The connection hotel needs the same confirmed ticket, Stopover needs the outbound and return flights in the same reservation, and Touristanbul needs both flights under one PNR.
• One ticket, layover under 6 hours. Stay in the transit area and go to your gate. Touristanbul starts at 6 hours.
• One ticket, Economy. From 6 hours, Touristanbul is the free option if your ticket number starts with 235 and a tour fits the times in the table above. From 12 hours, the connection hotel is also possible if no shorter connection exists on your route. You get one or the other on a layover.
• One ticket, Business. Same, except the connection hotel threshold is nine hours.
• Round trip, all Turkish Airlines, ticket number starting 235, stopping 20 hours to 7 days. Apply for Stopover at least 72 hours ahead; it excludes Touristanbul in the same waiting period.
• Layover over 24 hours. Touristanbul stops at 24 hours. The Hotel service page names no upper layover limit and says you "might receive accommodation for up to two nights"; the Stopover page sets 20 hours to 7 days.

Every option that involves leaving the airport needs entry into Türkiye; for a PRC ordinary passport, see the 90-in-180-day exemption above.

While you wait inside the airport

• Wi-Fi. iGA's Wi-Fi page says "Unlimited and free internet" is available, by mobile number with an SMS password or by access code obtained by scanning your passport or identity card at a terminal kiosk.
• Sleeping pods. iGA Sleepod has 44 cabins at International, Gates D, with hourly prices in EUR.
• Airport hotels. YOTEL Istanbul Airport has 451 cabins: 171 landside, bookable by anyone, and 280 airside, bookable only by people travelling internationally; cabins can be booked for stays from 4 hours. Hilton Istanbul Airport has 485 rooms within walking distance of the airport; its page does not say whether it is before or after passport control.
• Left luggage. iGA's Left Luggage page lists offices and lockers on the arrivals floor (opposite exit 13 and across Exit Gate 14) and lockers near Gates 1 and 6 on the departures level. The 2026 tariff for 24 hours runs from TRY 210 (small) to TRY 690 (XL); the offices also take XXL at TRY 860.
• Security. The iGA Security and Baggage Restrictions page says all departing and transfer passengers and their baggage are scanned; take laptops, cameras and large electronics out into a separate tray, and at the later checkpoint the 1-litre transparent re-sealable bag with containers of up to 100 ml. The page says there is no restriction on liquids, except dangerous liquids, at terminal-entrance security checkpoints.

Getting into the city

If you have entered Türkiye, iGA's Public Transportation page lists Havaist buses (11 routes to the city centre), İETT buses (5 routes), both boarding on Transportation floor -2, and the M11 metro. The Halkalı-Arnavutköy section of M11 opened on 20 June 2026, so the metro now runs to Halkalı.

The page text shows no departure times or fares, and the only journey time it gives is 15 minutes for the Taksim to Beşiktaş leg of one line, not airport to city; the official pages give no taxi fare amount. The Istanbul Airport FAQ (B2, undated) says the airport is 53 km from Taksim and 65 km from Kadıköy, and (question 10) describes the way out after an international arrival: go to the transfer level, pass the passport counters, take the stairs down to baggage claim, then go through the customs gate to the greeters' hall. No page gives a time for the trip back and security.

If your connection is cancelled or delayed

• The Hotel service page offers all meals at the hotel on full board for the stay to passengers whose flights are cancelled, delayed or overbooked; its other conditions apply.
• The Istanbul Airport FAQ (B3, questions 15 and 16, undated) says that if your international connecting flight is cancelled and you are on the arrivals level, you can go to the Turkish Airlines Transfer Desk in the middle of the transfer level, or in the A, B or F zones also to the east or west Care Point counters.
• Stopover is not available for a ticket that did not meet the criteria before a complimentary change caused by a flight disruption.

The pages give no refund, compensation or rebooking rules for a cancelled or delayed connection.
