Best Travel eSIM 2026: Airalo vs Saily vs Holafly

The short answer: There is no permanent “best travel eSIM.” Airalo is a strong first check for a broad catalogue and local, regional and global choices; Saily is worth comparing for fixed-data, regional, global and selected unlimited options; Holafly is most relevant when a destination’s unlimited-style plan fits your dates. The winner is the exact plan that names an acceptable local network, supplies enough high-speed data, permits the hotspot you need and starts at the right time.

Do not choose from a provider-wide price table. Plans, partner networks, fair-use rules and promotions can change by destination. This page was checked on 13 July 2026, but every recommendation below requires a fresh checkout comparison.

Compare the plan, not the logo

Open the same destination and dates in all three providers and record:

The old guide’s fixed Japan, Thailand, Europe, US and Australia prices are gone because they were a dated snapshot without plan URLs or checkout evidence.

Airalo, Saily and Holafly at a glance

This is not a network-speed ranking. All three rely on local network partners, and two products sold in the same country may use different roaming profiles or carriers.

Airalo: best when plan choice matters

Airalo says it offers packages across more than 200 countries and regions. Its catalogue can include local, regional and global options, fixed data, unlimited data in selected cases and some Discover+ plans with calls and texts.

The useful feature is choice, but that also means there is no single Airalo rule. Airalo’s own help centre says a validity period may begin when the eSIM connects to a supported network or when it is installed; the package’s Validity Policy determines which. Unlimited packages can slow after a specified daily amount, shown in that plan’s additional information. Read Airalo’s data and validity explanation before installing.

Airalo supports personal hotspot when the device and network support it, but APN configuration may be required. Refunds also depend on purchase channel, activation and reason; the current terms distinguish legal withdrawal, wrong purchase, plan changes and service failure.

Use Airalo’s current plan gateway when:

• the itinerary crosses several countries and a regional plan covers every stop;
• you need a less common destination;
• the named partner network and allowance are competitive;
• a top-up or calls/texts option is important and explicitly included.

Do not choose it only because the brand has the largest total destination count.

Saily: compare regular, unlimited and global products separately

Saily is part of the Nord Security ecosystem, but buying a Saily data plan is not the same thing as routing all traffic through a VPN. Its app advertises security features including DNS-based ad blocking; a separate Saily Ultra subscription includes additional products and travel benefits.

Saily now has global plans, so the old claim that it offered no universal option is outdated. Its official global page listed 121 destinations when checked. Saily Ultra likewise advertises 121+ destinations, 30 GB of full-speed monthly data and continued data at 1 Mbps after that. A regular fixed-data plan, a destination unlimited plan, a prepaid global plan and Ultra are different products with different validity and renewal rules.

Saily’s official comparison content states that selected unlimited plans can provide 5 GB per day without speed restrictions before speed drops to up to 1 Mbps for the remainder of the 24-hour period. That is materially different from “unlimited full speed.” Its refund help says an uninstalled eSIM or unactivated data plan may qualify for a full refund within 30 days of purchase, subject to current policy and case details.

Use Saily’s current plan gateway when:

• its partner network and total checkout price beat the alternatives;
• you value its app-level security tools;
• a global validity period fits a multi-trip year;
• the selected unlimited fair-use threshold fits your daily use.

Check whether the product auto-renews. Saily Ultra starts its subscription at purchase, while prepaid plans can follow different activation rules.

Holafly: “unlimited” still needs four checks

Holafly’s main appeal is the ability to buy many destination plans by number of days without counting a fixed data bucket. It can be convenient for a short, high-use trip, but the old article’s “unlimited, no throttling” promise was too broad.

Holafly’s terms state that an unlimited subscription’s coverage and speed can be subject to the local network provider’s fair-use policy. Its help centre also says hotspot data is not necessarily unlimited and directs users to the destination’s technical specifications. Before choosing Holafly, record:

1. the amount of high-speed data before fair-use management;
2. the reduced speed and reset period;
3. daily or total hotspot allowance;
4. whether the destination uses one or multiple partner networks.

Holafly can still be the best fit, but “unlimited” should mean no hard data cutoff under the plan—not guaranteed maximum speed or unlimited tethering.

Device compatibility: model, region and carrier lock all matter

Do not rely on a generic “iPhone XS and newer” list without checking the exact model and sales region. Apple says an iPhone used with another provider must be unlocked; on iPhone, Settings → General → About → Carrier Lock should show “No SIM Restrictions.” Apple also notes important mainland China model differences. As of its March 2026 support update, only specified mainland-China iPhone models support eSIM there, while Hong Kong and Macao variants can differ.

Use Apple’s current travel eSIM guidance or the device manufacturer’s support page. For Android, check the exact model number, region and software—not just the marketing family name. A Samsung or Pixel model sold in one market may have different eSIM support from the same name sold elsewhere.

Before purchase:

• confirm the phone is eSIM-compatible and carrier-unlocked;
• confirm there is an available eSIM slot/profile capacity;
• check whether dual-SIM operation meets the need;
• update the operating system and save the provider’s manual installation data;
• have stable Wi-Fi for installation.

How much data do you need?

Estimate by behaviour rather than destination stereotypes.

Light use

Maps, messaging, occasional ride-hailing and email. Download offline maps and media over Wi-Fi. A modest fixed-data plan is usually easier to compare than unlimited.

Normal travel use

Frequent maps, social photos, restaurant searches, cloud messaging and occasional short video. Check phone usage for a comparable week at home, then subtract home Wi-Fi traffic and add a buffer.

Heavy use

Video calls, streaming, live uploads, laptop tethering or remote work. Verify high-speed and hotspot allowances. An “unlimited” phone plan that limits hotspot to a small daily amount may fail a laptop user.

Do not buy four plans for a family on the assumption that one phone can always tether everyone. Hotspot drains battery, separates people from their connection and can be restricted by the plan.

Local eSIM, home roaming or travel eSIM?

An eSIM has not “fully replaced” physical SIMs. A local physical SIM may still be cheaper, provide a local number or work in a phone without eSIM. A pocket Wi-Fi device can still be useful for a group, though it introduces charging and return logistics.

Multi-country plans: convenient does not always mean cheaper

A regional plan is valuable when it covers every stop under one validity period and avoids installing several profiles. It is not automatically 40–60% cheaper.

Install without wasting validity

There is no universal instruction to install exactly one day before departure. Read the plan’s activation policy first.

1. Save the order confirmation, QR code and manual activation details offline.
2. Install over stable Wi-Fi only when the provider says installation will not start validity too early.
3. Label the line with the destination/provider name.
4. Keep the home line available for calls or SMS only if you understand its roaming charges.
5. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data.
6. Turn data roaming on for the travel eSIM if instructed, and off for the home SIM if you want to prevent home-carrier data charges.
7. Disable cellular data switching if it could send traffic through the expensive home line.
8. On arrival, enable the travel line and allow time to register on the partner network.

Do not delete an eSIM while troubleshooting unless support instructs you to. Some QR codes cannot be installed twice.
